Hungry Lucy

Hungry Lucy is a darkwave, trip-hop duo with a female vocalist. Beginning in 1998, they have released three full-length CDs. On Alfa Matrix in Europe (including EU only 2CD boxset versions) and on Hungry Media for the US. Led by Christa Belle (lyrics, vocals, music) and War-N Harrison (music, programming and production), the two came together when Harrison was asked to contribute work on a Depeche Mode tribute album in 1998.

The name "Hungry Lucy" refers to a young woman named Lucy Ryan who died in 1792. According to the ghost story of Havoc House, Psychic Sybil Leek is claimed to have channeled Ryan, and reported that Ryan was constantly complaining about being hungry.

Before We Stand ... We Crawl




For their fourth release, Hungry Lucy beautifully demonstrates their passion for the craft of songwriting. Rather than spend months in production, this time around the duo present "Before We Stand ... We Crawl" as a collection of six raw, emotional songs. These basic arrangements use piano, acoustic guitar, strings, wind instruments and sparse drum parts to underpin Christa Belle’s heart-felt lyrics and highly emotive vocals. Taking the "less is more" approach, the duo purposely left each song exposed with emotion at the surface, stripping away any pretense that may surround electronic music.

Spokes - People Like People Like You

The Silent Ballet review:

Spokes, so says their myspace, reside in the north of England and make music “mainly as a way
of keeping warm.” On listening to their debut album, People Like People Like You, it’s clear
that their sumptuous mix of post-rock, folk, and slow-core is going to be responsible for
warming more than a few cockles itself, as it somehow evokes the feeling of sitting in front
of a roaring log fire in a cabin located in the midst of a snow-bound forest.
Opener "We Like To Dance And Steal Things" neatly encapsulates the feeling of cautious
optimism that pervades the album, beginning with a tender guitar melody and joined quickly by
simple drums and a lovely violin figure which gently unfurls like the first flower of spring,
shedding snow and poking its head through the slowly thawing earth to reach the bright, pale
sunlight outside. When the music picks up and begins to race towards the finish line, it
feels like a small victory has been won against the cruelty of winter. "Young People! All
Together" begins in a similarly downbeat fashion but soon picks up thumping propulsion to
bring to mind any number of Canadian orchestral-indie contemporaries, and adds the unexpected delight of genuinely soaring vocals before breaking down into a wash of reverb and feedback that manages to sound like a beautiful and haunting conclusion rather than an extraneously noisy and intrusive addition. While the three all-too-brief minutes of joyous instrumental"Scatter: I Miss You" are a wonderful display for the utterly gorgeous violin playing thatthreads throughout Spokes’ songs, "Precursor" shows Elbow how sad-eyed and weary reallyshould be done, with a desolate, lonely vocal giving way to heartbreaking wordless harmoniesand eventually a passionate, swelling instrumental section that’s sure to have people brushing the tears away.

A testament to the quality of People Like People Like You is that it could easily sit nestled
amongst the better releases of one of the finer Canadian independent labels without fear of
shame nor reproach. Spokes have crafted a genuinely lovely album that suits the brittle
winter mornings as well as the scarf and mittens your mother used to make you wear as a
child, and in doing so, have produced one of the finest releases of 2008 so far.

Rhythm guitarist Eric Berg formed the band with the idea of putting ten musicians in a band without any rehearsal, and performing a D chord for 45 minutes (similar to Terry Riley's In C). He continued performances with numerous instrumentalists before releasing their first recording If I Could See Dallas on Kindercore Records in 1999.

The Pastels - Up For a Bit With The Pastels

The Pastels are a group from Glasgow, Scotland, UK.

They have been described as an 'almost pop' group. As the description implies, the group have some pop elements but miss out on others, and have never charted. Their early records (1982-85) for labels like Whaam!, Creation, Rough Trade, and Glass Records, had a raw and immediate sound, melodic and amateur, which seemed all at odds with the time. But an emerging fanzine culture identified with the group's sound and image, and slowly The Pastels started to influence a new wave of groups, which interested the NME and other UK media.

Up for a Bit with The Pastels is the debut album by The Pastels, released in 1987. It was named the 37th best Scottish album by The Scotsman

Melodyguild - Aitu EP '2008 (Promo)

Melodyguild was founded in 2002 by former Love Spirals Downwards singer, Suzanne Perry, collaborating with several former members of L.A. dream pop band, The Von Trapps. The band performed a few local shows and was rumored to be recording an EP for Projekt Records, called "Aitu", but the release date was steadily pushed back due to band member changes. In 2004, Projekt Records released a Melodyguild cover of Danny Elfman's "Sally's Song" for a limited edition holiday single. The track was a collaboration between Perry and Silver Screen's Cris Miller. In 2005, the band's website (www.melodyguild.com) went offline and nothing more has surfaced from them since.
